Obituary for Jesse Skinner

Funeral services for Jesse Skinner age 95 of Wisner, NE will be Monday, February 28, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Christ in Wisner, NE. Interment will be in the Wisner Cemetery with Military Honors by Wisner V.F.W. Post #5767. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Kuzelka-Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner. The visitation will continue on Monday from 9 a.m. till service time at the church. Jesse passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the Wisner Care Center.

Jesse William Skinner was born October 24, 1915 on a farm south of Wisner, NE, to parents Elmer and Anna (Cammenzind) Skinner. He attended Cuming County Rural School District #66 and graduated from Wisner High School in 1933. Jesse graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture with a major in Animal Husbandry. He was a member of Farm House fraternity. While in college, Jesse worked as a cashier at the Cornhusker Hotel, Tasty Pastry Shop, in Lincoln. Following college graduation he began a career as a County Extension Agent for the University of Nebraska in the Thedford district, which served Blaine, Thomas, Hooker and Grant counties. He was also an agent in Harlan and Cedar counties.
On June 15, 1940, he was united in marriage to Edith Leisy of Wisner at Alliance, NE. They were the parents of three children, Joan, Gail and Brent.
Jesse served in World War II from 1942-1946 as a First Lieutenant in the Army with the 375th Engineering Regiment in both the European and Pacific Theatres. When the war ended he and his wife returned to the family farm north of Wisner, where he operated a livestock feeding and farming business until his retirement in 1990.
Jesse was very active in the community and served on the Wisner School Board, as a director of the Cuming Co. Feeders Association, president of the Cuming Co. Cow-Calf organization, a director in the County Soil Conservation District, a member of the Wisner V.F.W. Post #5767, a veteran on the Heartland Honor Flight in 2008, served on the Wisner Rural Fire Board and president of the Wisner Farmers Farrowing Coop, Inc. Jesse organized the Goldenrod 4-H Club and served 20 years as the leader. He was honored as the State Outstanding 4-H Leader by the Nebraska Extension Service.
Jesse was baptized and confirmed at the First Congregational Church in Wisner, where he served in various positions. Following a merger, his membership was with the United Methodist Church of Christ where he actively served.
Following retirement, Jesse and Edith built a new home in Wisner and enjoyed spending time with their family as well as traveling to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Nova Scotia, and Canada and throughout the United States. Cruises through the Panama Canal, Alaska and the Virgin Islands were favorite trips.
In June 2010 the entire family gathered to celebrate with Jesse and Edith for their 95th birthdays and 70th wedding anniversary.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Catherine Moeller and grandson-in-law, Mark Landgren.
