Obituary for Norval L. Utemark

Memorial services for Norval L. Utemark age 92 of West Point, NE will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in West Point, NE with Pastor John Gierke officiating. Military Honors will follow the service with a luncheon afterwards. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Minnick Funeral Home in West Point is handling the arrangements for the family. Memorials may be made in honor of Norval Utemark to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, The Sunshine Center, or American Veteran’s Park.

Norval passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023 in Douglas County.

Norval LeRoy Utemark was the son of Ernest & Marie Utemark of rural Wakefield, NE, born January 2, 1931. He attended District #97, Wakefield High School & the University of Nebraska of Lincoln for his education to get his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education.

Upon graduation from the University of Nebraska in 1952, he received his diploma with honors, his Nebraska Teaching Permit, and his Draft Notice for 24 months of Military Service. Norval and Sharon L. English were married in December of 1951, and she was able to be with him during his military service. Sgt. Utemark was honorably discharged in 1954. He was a Vocational Agriculture teacher and FFA Insturctor at Eagle, West Point, and in the State Office in Lincoln, NE. He retired from the Nebraska Department of Labor at age 62.

Norval was a member of the American Legion 40/8 for 50+ years, FFA Alumni past officer, Life-member of FFA Alumni, Vocational Education Organizations, Izaak Walton League, Vintage Tool Collector Club, County & State Fair Board Member, West Point Chamber President, West Point City Council Member & Planning Commission Member, St. Paul Lutheran Church Council, Jaycees, Ike’s, Lions’ Club, UNL Alumni, and the Beef Club.

Norval was a collector of antique tools, especially Winchester guns and tools. He belonged to 3 nationwide clubs. He and Sharon attended many auctions and club gatherings for 40+ years. Fishing in Minnesota for 42 years for Northern Pike was in in the month of May with family and friends. At the end of the day, fish fry’s, happy hour, and talking about “the big fish that got away” was their entertainment. In earlier years, bowling and golfing were part of his activities. Most of all he enjoyed working in his shop and fixing things for himself and others. He also had a passion for making barnwood furniture for the craft shows. He was an avid Husker fan, always planning trips to follow the team. He always enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their school activities as thew grew up.

Norval is survived by his wife Sharon of 71 yeasrs, daughter Karla (Ted) Heimann, and daughter-in-law Cynthia (Greg) Tresnak, and his 5 grandchildren; Bradley (Renee) Utemark, Nicole (Brian) Wigington, Derek Tresnak, Lindsey (Ty) Fitzpatrick, and Daniel Heimann, and 4 great-grandchildren, Chase (Lexis) Utemark, Brittney Utemark & Brock Smyler, and Sydney & Benjamin Fitzpatrick, and 1 great-great grandchild, Breckyn Smyler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, his in-laws, and his son Kevin.
