Obituary for Bernice Grothe

Funeral services for Bernice M. Grothe age 100 of Wisner, NE will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wisner, NE with Pastor Jared Hartman officiating. Interment will be in the Wisner Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, May 15th from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bernice passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at the Wisner Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Monday, May 15th. Family visitation will begin at 10:00 and the service will follow at 11:00. Bernice will be interred at the Wisner Cemetery and a luncheon will be held in her honor after her internment.
Bernice Sullivan was born in Pierce, Nebraska on May 25th, 1922 to parents James Milton (Mick) Sullivan and Myrtle (Fletcher) Sullivan. Bernice attended Country School and after having graduated from Pierce High School she moved to Omaha where she graduated from The Boyle Business College. She then worked at the bomber plant in Bellevue, NE. She and Arnold were married in 1942 in Papillion, NE, after having met in high school playing baseball with some friends.
After WWII, they moved to Wisner in 1950 with their two girls, Linda and Susan. They lived there raising her girls until they graduated from Wisner High School. She served as a book keeper until she began working at the Wisner Library. Under her charge, she started a summer children’s story time program, expanded the Library hours, and oversaw some major renovations. Her grandchildren loved going to the Library and frequently rode the elevator until corrected. She retired from the Library in 1996. Bernice loved to read, play bridge, golf and antique. She, Linda, and Susan would take off on trips to watch golf tournaments and hit antique stores all along the way. In the summers, when the grandchildren were young, she and Arnold would have them come stay with them to fish, swim, and visit the Dairy Keen daily. She and Arnold were members of the St. Paul Lutheran while residing in Wisner.
Bernice was preceded in death by husband, Arnold, daughter, Linda Clatanoff, grandson, Derek Geschwender, and siblings James Sullivan, Clifford Sullivan, Cile Sullivan, Jane Sullivan, and George Sullivan. Survived by daughter, Susan (Grothe) Geschwender, grandchildren, Stacey Clatanoff, Jill (Mike) Frederick, Tyler Clatanoff, Quinn (Marty) Geschwender McGuire and great grandchildren, Lilianna Olson, Molly McGuire, Ava Frederick, Brody McGuire, and nieces and nephews.
