Sylvia passed away on Monday, March 1, 2021 at the Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer, NE.

Sylvia Anna Marie Brockemeier was born July 3, 1929 at the family farm west of West Point, NE. She was the first child of Frank and Ella (Heller) Brockemeier. She had one brother and three sisters. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Wisner. She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church and, after marriage, Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Beemer her entire life.
Sylvia attended country schools through the eighth grade. She was unable to attend high school because it was necessary for her to work on the family farm. The Brockemeier family worked hard picking corn by hand, stacking hay and tending to other crops and a variety of animals and fowl. Butchering, canning and gardening sustained their food needs. Sylvia also worked for several other farm families, helping with childcare, cooking and cleaning.

Sylvia met the love of her life, Orville Iden, at a dance in Beemer and, after an appropriate courtship, she and Orville were married on August 15, 1948. The reception was held on the Brockemeier family farm. They spent the first two years of their marriage in a rented farm home. When Sylvia would become homesick, Orville would break out his accordion and play and sing for his young bride. They were the parents of two daughters and one son.

In 1954, they moved to the Iden farmstead where they spent the remainder of their married life. They taught their children the value of honesty, kindness and hard work. Sylvia spent countless hours milking cows, feeding pigs and chickens, helping put up hay, butchering, canning and gardening. As kind a women as she was, you never wanted to see a snake cross her path as she became ruthless and broke out the hoe and …..! On cold winter evenings, she could be found ‘picking out’ black walnuts and sewing Barbie clothes for her daughters.

Sylvia attended many ‘old time dances’ as Orville entertained by playing the accordion and later bass fiddle with the Slough Grass Boys polka band. Sylvia taught her three young children to polka and waltz as she rarely had Orville as a dance partner. She and Orville spent many fun evenings with friends and even took a trip to Germany. In later years, they did wood and other crafts together. Sylvia was an avid quilter and made many for family and also made over 400 which she donated to Orphan Grain Train. She baked and decorated cakes for all of her grandchildren’s baptisms, birthdays and graduations. A lot of Halloween costumes were sewn by Sylvia for her grandchildren. Sylvia was also known for providing her special orange slush drink for family at holiday gatherings.

After Orville passed away in 2000, Sylvia remained on the beloved farm for a while before moving into West Point in 2009. In 2018, she moved to Colonial Haven assisted living and nursing home where she remained until her death.
