Obituary for Joseph Kreikemeier

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph J. Kreikemeier, age 89 of West Point, NE will be on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point, NE with Fr. Steve Emanuel as celebrant. Interment with military honors will be in the St. Michael’s Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Nielsen Community Center. Visitation with the family present will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Minnick Funeral Home in West Point is handling the arrangements.

Joe passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021 at St. Joseph's Hillside Villa.

Joe was born November 30, 1931, at rural Snyder to Henry and Elsie (Batenhorst) Kreikemeier. He grew up on the family farm north of Snyder and graduated from St. Leo’s Catholic School in Snyder.

He married Viola L. Knust on September 16, 1952, at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Howells, NE. They farmed until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952. Following basic training at Fr. Riley, KS, he served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953. He returned to Nebraska and farmed east of Snyder. With his wife, they raised crops, cattle and hogs. “Joey” enjoyed town team baseball, where he played shortstop and third base. He also enjoyed family boat outings at the Fremont Lakes. Viola and Joe loved to bowl and dance. Joe was also an avid card player. The retired to a new home they built in 1995 in West Point, NE. In retirement, Joe enjoyed playing cards with a local men’s group. Road trips included checking crops and stopping in with children and grandchildren for coffee breaks. Joe was a member of Snyder V.F.W. Post #8439.

He is survived by his wife, Viola, to whom he was married for 68 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elsie Kreikemeier; parents-in-law, Ben and Catherine Knust; son, Steven Kreikemeier; brother, Pat Kreikemeier; brothers-and sisters-in-law, Bernard Pieper, Judy (Jim) Kreikemeier, Joyce (Marvin) Kreikemeier, Joe Irene (Knust) Prusa, Frank and Alvina (Knust) Kreikemeier, Donald and Evelyn (Knust) Peitzmeier, Harold and LaRose (Knust) Meister, Ray Ortmeier and Dennis Knust.
