Obituary for Madalen Rief

Graveside services for Madalen T. Rief will be held on Friday, July 2, 2021 at 3:00 p.m at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in West Point, NE.

Madalen passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at St. Joseph's Hillside Villa in West Point, NE.

Madalen T. Rief was born on February 1, 1922 at West Point, NE to Frank and Johanna (Risse) Marksmeier. She attended St. Anthony’s School-St. Charles, rural West Point, NE.
On October 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to Leroy Rief at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church-St. Charles, rural West Point, NE. From this union five children were born, Richard, Evelyn, Marvin, Helen, and Kenneth.
The couple lived on a farm northeast of West Point, NE. Madalen worked as a bookkeeper alongside her husband at the West Point Coop. Upon Leroy’s retirement, the couple enjoyed spending the winter months in Edenburg, TX. In retirement her sewing skills were used to make jean quilts for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. As well as hundreds of lap robs for the Veterans Home in Norfolk, NE. Delivering them all personally each year upon returning from Texas. When she moved into the St. Joseph’s Retirement Community –she continue to make the veteran quilts and she would sew and mend clothes for all her friends living there. She continued to sew up until 18 months ago for family and friends. Madalen spent the last 13 months at St. Joseph’s Hillside Villa in West Point.
Madalen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Guild, Christian Mother’s, and was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #70. She enjoyed dancing and gardening and would can anything that would fit into a jar. Especially in the winter when doing the family butchering-her families favorite besides the homemade sausages was her famous canned meat. The famous “Oatmeal Meat” has been passed down from her to two generations, and is still a family “delicacy” today.
Survivors include-children: Richard and wife Mary Jo of Plymouth, MI Evelyn & Gene Meier of Plattsmouth, NE, Marvin & Dorothy Rief of Grand Island, NE, Helen and Kenny Engelmeyer of Valley, NE, and Ken & Pam Rief of West Point, NE; grandchildren: Michael & Susan Rief, Christopher Rief, Francis and Bradley Kwapizeskis, Eve & Kyle Legal. Deb & Kent Colgrove, Jane & Jerry Steffes, Lori Meier, Nancy & Steve Robeson. Julie & Brian Riedel, Angie & Kevin Wray. Brian Rief, Brad & Kristen Rief. David Engelmeyer, Joe & Amy Engelmeyer. Dustin & Jaqueline Rief, Heather & Jeramiah Johnson, Brittany & Mike Sones; great grandchildren: Mary, Carter, Anna Grace Rief, Andrew and Alex Rief, Sarah, Hannan and Abigail Kwapizeskis, Margaret and Mya Legal. Jenny Wiles, Matt and Mike Colgrove, Ryan and Ashley Sterffes, Elayna Meier, Devin, Caleb, Coryn, & Levi Rief. Kylie, Ella, and Olivia Wray, MaKayla and Coby Rief, Lauren, Meredith, and Nolan Rief.
