Obituary for Gerald "Jerry" Gustafson

Funeral services for Gerald "Jerry" Gustafson age 70 of West Point, NE will be held on Monday, October 7, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point, NE. Interment will be in the Westside Cemetery, rural Oakland, NE with a luncheon to follow at the Nielsen Community Center in West Point, NE. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will continue from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service, all at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point, NE. The family suggests that memorials be directed to the family for future designation in Jerry’s name.

Jerry passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at his home.

Gerald Verne Gustafson was born on January 20, 1949 at West Point, NE to Merle and Lola Ruth (Lofgren) Gustafson. He attended Cuming County Rural School District #14 and graduated from West Point High School in 1967. Jerry received his B.S. and Master’s Degree in Agricultural Education from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE.

On June 7, 1970, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Reimers at the Grace Lutheran Church in West Point, NE. Jerry worked in construction and at the Swine Testing Station at Clarkson, NE. He taught Agricultural Education at West Point High School for six years. Jerry was also an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance and Ed’s Insurance, and also served in many capacities at the West Point Super 8 Motel. He also drove bus for the West Point-Beemer School District for over 10 years. Jerry loved tending to his livestock, farming with his father, and especially the afternoon coffee breaks on the farm.

Jerry was serving as President of the Nebraska Limousin Association, served on the Westside Cemetery Board, was a former 4-H Leader, was a long time Division Superintendent at the Nebraska State Fair, and had served as a judge for 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA over the years.

Jerry loved most of all spending time with his children, their spouses, and grandchildren. He enjoyed attending Husker football games, he was always there to lend a helping hand, and there wasn’t anyone he met that he considered to be a stranger.

Son-David and Melanie Gustafson of Columbus, NE and children-Quenton, Camden, Kortlin, and Cullan
Brother-Rodney and Carol Gustafson of Waverly, NE
Sister-Denise and John Kerschinske of Cedar Bluffs, NE
Brother-in-law-Monte and Jo Ellyn Reimers of Okemos, MI
Nieces and nephews also survive him.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents- Merle and Lola Ruth Gustafson, and a daughter-Lori Gustafson.
