Obituary for Leonard Hagedorn

Mass of Christian Burial for Leonard Hagedorn age 92 of West Point, NE will be on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point with Fr. Steve Emanuel celebrating the mass. Interment with Military Honors will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home and will continue at the church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.

Leonard passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at St. Joseph's Hillside Villa in West Point, NE.

Leonard Frank Hagedorn was born on August 5, 1926, the son of Anton and Mary (Batenhorst) Hagedorn, in West Point, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church-St. Charles and attended St. Anthony’s School.

Leonard entered the U.S. Army on September 13, 1946, serving a tour of duty in Japan, before being honorably discharged on May 21, 1947. He returned to the family farm, farming with his father and brothers and later with his son.

On October 30, 1951, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Rolf at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church-St. Charles. To this union five children were born: Robert, Mary, Cheryl, Carole and Lori. Along with farming for 35 years, Leonard also did construction work, helped build roads and worked at Bomgaars for the last 20 years until retiring for the final time.

Leonard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Adrial Kaup VFW Post #4912, Arthur Mack American Legion Post #70, and the Cuming Co. Historical Society. He loved restoring Pioneer Wooden Windmills, made several full size wooden windmills, and helped erect the windmill on the Cuming Co. Fairgrounds. He enjoyed woodworking, restoring old engines and taking them through the Cuming Co. Fair Parade, fishing, hunting for Morel mushrooms each May, and attending his coffee groups. Leonard “Hoagie” always had a smile on his face and loved to share a good story or joke, along with the occasional practical joke.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years Geraldine of West Point, NE; son-Robert (Nadine) Hagedorn of Omaha, NE and children-Daun (Jason) Spangler and children Caelyn and Brendan, Robert (Kelly) Hagedorn, Jr. and children Michael, Alana and Gavin; daughter-Mary (Randy) Troyer of West Point, NE and children- Heather Fisher (Tim Rezac) and children Nicole, Jaxon and Zander, Adam (Nellie) Fisher and children Hudson and Everett; daughter-Cheryl (Dennis) Wordekemper of West Point, NE and children- Debi Wordekemper (fiancé Adam Rief), and Brian Wordekemper; daughter Carole Stratmann (Tim Havlovic) and son Nathan Stratmann; daughter- Lori (Paul) Neesen of Lincoln, NE and children Chelsey (Adam) Wardyn and children Logan and Aiden, Cheney Neesen (fiancée Courtney Plucknett). He is also survived by a sister-Agnes Throener of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law-Dorothy Rolf of Omaha, NE, Bonnie Ault of Boulder City, NV, and Roberta Hagedorn of West Point, NE.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents-Anton and Mary Hagedorn, brothers-Raymond and Bernard Hagedorn, sister-in-law-Liz Hagedorn, and brothers-in-law-Daniel Rolf and Jerome Throener.
