Janet Ann (Knudson) Stofferahn was born on January 31, 1948 to Clarence and Florine (Sanders) Knudson in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up on a farm north of Salem, SD. Janet attended elementary school at Orland, SD through the second grade, then attended Salem Public School, where she graduated from Salem High School in 1966. After graduation, she attended Stewart’s School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls, SD.

Janet met Lynn Stofferahn at a 4th of July street dance in Canistota, SD in the summer of 1966. They were married on December 23, 1967 at Janet’s home church, Salem Lutheran Church in rural Salem, SD. Janet practiced her profession in Sioux Falls and Brookings, SD. She jokingly referred to getting her PHT degree while in Brookings (Putting Hubby Through).

After Lynn’s graduation in 1969, they moved to Fort Lee, VA for Lynn’s Army basic training, and their son Tony was born in August of 1970. From there they moved to Ft. Carson, CO, while Lynn finished his tour of duty with the Army. They returned to the Midwest, while Lynn worked for Wilson Trailer Company, Farm Credit and banks in the Midwest. A daughter, Kimberly was born in November of 1973 in Sioux City, IA.

Janet remained a stay at home mom, taking care of the household duties and raising two children, throughout Lynn’s career and the many moves. Lynn and Janet moved to West Point in November of 1994, after Lynn took a position with Farmers and Merchants Bank and also joined Grace Lutheran Church in West Point.

Janet was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in 1995. She fought a long and courageous battle with MS for the last 24 years until she couldn’t fight it any longer.

Janet enjoyed the outdoors, working with flowers, going camping, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and getting together with family. She also enjoyed reading romance novels.
