Obituary for Berniece M. Kaufman

Funeral services for Berniece Kaufman age 93 of Beemer, NE will be on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Beemer Mennonite Church in Beemer, NE with Pastor Lewis Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Beemer Cemetery with a luncheon following at the Beemer American Legion Hall. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will continue on Wednesday from noon until the time of the service, both at the Beemer Mennonite Church in Beemer, NE. Minnick Funeral Home in West Point is handling the arrangements.

Berniece passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Pender Community Hospital.

Berniece Kaufman was born March 3, 1925 on a farm northeast of Beemer, NE to Sam and Mary (Huebert) Oswald. Her family lived on farms in the Cuming County area of Nebraska. She attended country schools through 10th grade and was baptized at the Plum Creek Mennonite Church as a teenager.
On December 26, 1950, she married Leslie Kaufman of Manson, IA. They made their home on a farm near Manson until moving to a farm south of Wakefield, NE in 1960. A daughter Mary and son Merle were born in Iowa. A son Lowell was born after their move to Nebraska. In 1964 following the death of her husband in a tractor accident, Berniece chose to remain on the farm and continued to raise her children there.
After receiving her GED in 1974, Berniece went to work as a cook in the Wakefield Health Care Center and worked there through the 1980s.
Berniece was a faithful member of Beemer Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday School periodically and participated in the Ladies Sewing Circle for many years.
She belonged to a neighborhood Birthday Club and the Serve All Extension Club.
Berniece moved to Beemer in 2006 and lived there until she entered the Wakefield Health Care Center in 2016.
Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were a source of joy. She enjoyed being out in God’s creation; observing the clouds, watching and listening to birds, planting many a tree, tending to her flowers and working in the garden. She had a special love of animals- especially horses. She also enjoyed sewing, reading and cooking.
Survivors include-Daughter- Mary and Marvin Holt of Glendale, AZ and family-Eric and Caroline Holt and children-Cameron and Aidan, and Angela and Chris O’Brian and children-Kayla and Emilee; Son-Merle Kaufman of Beemer, NE; Son-Lowell and Melissa Kaufman of Wichita, KS and family-Jesse and Jena Kaufman and children-Timothy and Sierra, Josiah and Amy Kaufman and children-Allie, Isaiah and Elsie, Rachel and Chris Bodoin and children-Aiden and Peyton, Jeremy and Bree Kaufman and children-Hadassah, Reagan and Dietrich, Aaron Kaufman, Marcus and Katie Kaufman, Sarah Kaufman and son Cayden, Jordan Nichols, Lauren Nichols, and Kaelyn Nichols. Also surviving are two brothers- Sam Oswald of West Point, NE, Rolland and Marilyn Oswald of Beemer, NE and two sisters-in-law-Cheryl Oswald of Wakefield, NE and Myrtle Kaufman of Manson, IA.

Berniece was preceded in death by her husband-Leslie, parents-Sam and Mary Oswald, a brother-Ralph Oswald, and sister-in-law-Dorothy Oswald.
