Funeral services for Douglas Malchow age 74 of rural Pender, NE will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church-rural Pender, NE with Pastor Robert Schilling officiating. Interment will be in the Wisner Cemetery with a lunch to follow at the Wisner Auditorium. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will continue on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Minnick Funeral Home in West Point is handling the arrangements for the family.

Douglas William Malchow was born March 16, 1943 at Beemer, Nebraska to Hugo and Norma (Kuester) Malchow. He was baptized on April 16, 1943 and confirmed on April 14, 1957 at Zion Lutheran Church at Wisner, Nebraska. Doug attended Zion Lutheran School and graduated from Wisner High School in 1961. He graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 1966 with a degree in Agronomy. He served in the United States Coast Guard Reserves from 1966 – 1972. Doug married Gail Vosteen on December 28, 1968 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Pender. They farmed southwest of Pender and raised five daughters – Kay, Amy, Ann, Emily, and Sarah. Doug was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in fall of 2000 and entered Colonial Haven in January of 2014. He passed away on January 12, 2018 at Beemer, Nebraska.

Doug was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Pender, Nebraska where he held various offices. Next to his faith and family, Doug was happiest when he was farming and feeding cattle. He was a lifelong resident of Cuming County and a past member of the Pender Legion, the Pender Jaycees, the Cuming County Pork Producers, the Cuming County Feeders Association, and the Cuming County Fair Foundation. He served on the Cuming County Fair Board for 29 years. Doug enjoyed going to tractor pulls, county fairs, and the Nebraska State Fair. He also collected antique John Deere tractors.

Doug is survived by his wife Gail of 49 years, his daughters and their families – Kay and Dave Raabe, Claire and Jayden of Wisner, NE; Amy and Trevor Topp, Mason and Ellie of Winside, NE; Ann and Scott Kraus, Chase and Evelyn of Strafford, MO; Emily and Nate Hanson and Beau of North Sioux City, SD, and Sarah and Kyle Blakeman, Taryn, Burke, and Quinn of Merna, NE. He is also survived by his sister, Connie and Dean Ullerich of Omaha, NE, sister-in-law, Mary and Gerald Smith of Pender, NE, nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and in-laws, Alvin and Delta Vosteen of Pender.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Cuming County Fair Foundation.
