Obituary for Kenneth H. Kauffold

Funeral services for Kenneth H. Kauffold, 87 of Dodge, were held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge, NE. Father Andy Phan and Father Steve Emanuel, St. Mary’s Church, West Point; con-celebrated the Mass at 10:30 AM. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dodge with military honors and firemen final call. Visitation was held at the church on Monday from 3-7, with Divine Mercy at 3 PM and a Rosary at 7 PM and on Tuesday, from 9 AM until time of service.

Ken Hugh Kauffold was born in Dodge on November 13, 1930. His parents were Ernest E. and Mayme (Parr) Kauffold. He attended school at St. Wenceslaus and Dodge Public, graduating from Dodge High in 1948. Ken joined the US Air Force in 1949. In August of 1951, Ken was stationed at Kadena AFB, Okinawa, doing keypunch. He was discharged on Nov. 10, 1952 as Staff Sergeant.

Ken attended classes at Creighton University and worked for OPPD, before returning to Dodge in 1959 to help his parents at the Dodge Criterion. His father died March 13, 1962.

On Oct. 18, 1962, Ken married Kathleen Schulte at St. Wenceslaus Church in Dodge and lived in Dodge. His mother, Mayme, continued the newspaper until Ken and Kathy took ownership in 1965.

Together, they also edited and published many local history books. Ken was a member of the National Press Assn; was president of Northeast Nebraska Press Assn and the Nebraska State Press Assn. He served as state president in 1983. For 45 years, Ken recorded the weather in Dodge for the National Weather Service.

Ken was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, a lector and choir member. He was a Chamber member and served as president of the Chamber of Commerce during Dodge Centennial in 1986 and also served on the Centennial Committee. Ken was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years and served as past Commander. He is also a life member of VFW Post 8597 and belonged to the Sons of the American Legion. Earlier, Ken was a member of the Dodge Volunteer Fire Dept and now was an honorary member. Yep> You guessed it! Ken served Dodge in many ways.

Ken enjoyed all sports and music, especially watching his grandchildren play and perform. The Kauffolds also enjoyed vacations and travel. Ken was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Survivors include son, Andy (Vickie) Kauffold, Bennington; Jennie (Mike) Gaiss, North Andover, MA; Dr. Nitha (Bob) White, Shelby, NE; Chele (Christian) Randell, Monument, CO and Lynda (Jim) Doernemann, Dodge; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Rachel Kauffold, Wheat Ridge, CO; Hannah (Matt) Ketcham and Leo, Pittsburgh; Kaitlin Gaiss, San Francisco, Ryan Gaiss, Boston and Austin Gaiss, South Bend, IN; Chatrice White, Tallahassee, FL; Jessica and Emelie Randell, Monument, CO; Spencer Randell, Boulder, CO; Casey, Brandi and Dax Doernemann, Dodge; Ryan Beccard (Ann), Hayden, Nolan, Damian, Brendan and Lauren, Nebraska City; sister, Iris Bicak, Kearney and brother, Richard (Mary) at Hendersonville, NC; brother-in-law, Bill Kuretich, Los Angeles, CA. In-laws: Susan (Tom) Schicker, DeWitt, MI; John (Linda) Schulte, Lincoln; Jean (Jerry) Karlen, Pender and Tudi Sprugin, East Lansing, MI. and many nieces and nephews.

Ken was preceded by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan (Don) Andersen and Patricia (Bill) Wisnieski and Jeanette Kuretich; brothers-in-law: Laddie Bicak and Michael Spurgin and parents-in-law, Leonard and Mae Schulte.

Memorials are suggested to family desire. Minnick Funeral Chapel in Dodge was in charge of arrangement.
