Obituary for Kenneth Schenk

Kenneth Schenk
Kenneth Fredrick Schenk, 86, of West Point, NE, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, NE. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 9th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point, with Military Honors at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Ken was born August 12, 1931 in Campbell, NE, one of nine children of parents Ralph and Margaret (Koch) Schenk.

A proud disabled Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, he met his wife-to-be, Avis Clark while stationed at Fort Sill, OK in 1954. They were married in June of that same year and made their first home in Hastings, NE. Eventually they moved to Red Cloud, NE and then in 1974 moved the family to West Point, NE for employment at D & S Tires. Later on, he was employed by Nielsen’s and finally the City of West Point. He retired due to health reasons in his late 70’s. He had suffered serious disabling injuries in two separate motor vehicle accidents when he was younger. One while in the service and another several years later. His disability never stopped him! He performed hard physical labor on badly injured legs. He loved to work.

He enjoyed yard work, carpentry, and working in his garage. Johnny Cash was his favorite and he loved country music! In his later years, he enjoyed doing puzzles.

He was an avid sports fan. He loved baseball as a boy and was a lifelong New York Yankees fan. He also followed the Green Bay Packers, the Cornhuskers, and was especially interested in all of the Lady Husker sports-softball, basketball, and volleyball.

Ken was very competitive and won many trophies for his ability to bowl and toss horseshoes. When no longer able to play, he enjoyed shooting pool and playing with his buddies at the Sunshine Center. He became the “King” of the bank shot!

After heart attacks and heart surgery, he still was active. In addition to pool at the Sunshine Center, he went to Cardiac Rehab regularly.

He is survived by his wife, Avis of West Point, and his daughter, Beth Schenk, of Birmingham, AL, grandsons, Courtney Schenk and wife Larissa and children Alyssa and Olivia of Omaha, NE, Justin Schenk and wife Brittany of Phoenix, AZ, Dylan Schenk and wife Alyson and children Reghan, Aidan and Lennon of Lincoln, NE, Anthony Schenk and wife Amy and children Presley and Jaycee of Omaha, NE, his brother, Lloyd Schenk and his wife Marilyn of Enumclaw, WA, his sisters, Marjorie Kudrna of Wayne, NE, Eleanor and husband Raymond Burgess of Red Cloud, NE, Gloria and husband Jack Steiner of Hastings, NE, and Darlene Davis of Red Cloud, NE, along with many nieces and nephews.
