Martha passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Scribner Good Samaritan Home after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

Martha Viola Heller was born on May 29, 1943 in Cuming Co., NE to August and Leona (Toelle) Haase. She was baptized on June 2, 1943 and later confirmed on May 5, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Howells, NE. She grew up in the Howells, NE area and graduated from Howells High School in 1961.

On October 17, 1964, she married Robert Heller at First Trinity Lutheran Church, Altona, NE. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014.

Matha was an active farmwife. She had a large garden and canned a lot of produce. She milked cows, bottle fed calves, farrowed sow, raised and sold chickens, turkeys and eggs. Martha spent countless hours outside on the farm doing whatever was necessary, working in the field or grinding feed for the livestock. She enjoyed cross stitch embroidery and made many pieces for her nieces and nephews. Martha also made many wooden figurines for all of the holidays. Martha was a member of the Cuming County Dairy Women. She also took care of the township booth at the county fair collecting many grain sheaths, various grains, fruits and vegetables. The Cuming County Fair was important to her from the time that she was a member of the Bismark Livestock Club and entered her market calves. Martha never missed a county fair and a chance to watch all the kids show their animals.

Martha was a mentor and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews. She spent countless hours with them, both working and playing. She will be missed by all who knew her kind and loving ways.

Martha worked as laundry supervisor at the Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer, NE, until the time of her retirement. She enjoyed working there with not only the other employees, but also spending time with the residents. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Beemer, NE.
